INTERESTING SEED AND PLANT COMPANIES AND GARDENING SUNDRIES

Each Autumn Association members receive a copy of a special Kings seed catalogue offering an excellent and discounted range of seeds for members of Allotment Associations. Packet prices are substantially below those in the shops.

The following lists a selection of small specialist companies that provide an interesting range of seeds including unusual and heritage varieties. Many provide catalogues and/or have good websites. Anyone can buy from them and the service is generally excellent. Many of the varieties on offer are old favourites and heritage and heirloom varieties that are big on taste and crop over a longer season but have been abandoned by the larger companies bowing to commercial pressures from large growers and the supermarkets for uniformity of appearance and cropping periods, storage length and disease resistance, often at the expense of taste. In the face of current EC legislation on registering seed varieties, these companies are the last bastion for some of these older varieties. If you fancy growing something a little bit different, a heritage variety that's big on taste or not found in main stream catalogues or multicoloured vegetables not available in the supermarkets, these are great companies to turn to. You will find a great range of exotic varieties as well as ancient varieties that simply sound exotic but were once widely grown and known.
