New Site Representative Wanted

Following on from Jim's retirement (a big thanks to Jim for all his hard work in the last few years) a new site representative is required.

If your interested please come along to the seed and vegetable swap on the 4th May and speak to Theresa Gavin (Chair Person).

The main duties of the site rep are to liaise with Preston City Council about the care and letting of the allotments. You'll keep track of plot holders (info supplied by the council) and show prospective new tenants around. You'll also need to attend meetings with the council and other allotment site representatives. These are held every quarter.

Seed and Plant Swap Sunday 4th May

Everyone is welcome to the Seed and Plant Swap on Sunday the 4th May. To be held near the shop and site hut near the car park. This is an opportunity to try fruit and vegetables that you don't normally grow. Don't worry if you don't have anything to swap, a small monetary contribution instead will help.

There will be a raffle and a request for raffle prizes has been put forward by the allotment committee.

This is also an opportunity to purchase homemade/homegrown produce such as jams and chutneys, and contribute any of your own too!

If you are not already a member of the N.S.A.L.G pleas consider joining. The membership is £3 per year and you'll be able to join at the plant swap.

The invitation is being extended to allotment holders of the Penwortham Holme East site too.

Allotment Holders Meeting

The allotment holders meeting held on the evening of Monday 28th April was well attended. Here's a brief summary of what you missed if you couldn't attend:

  • The padlocks on the two main gates are to be replaced but no specific date has been given by the council. There have been a few instances where allotment holders have become stuck inside the allotments because the padlock has been forced shut. Please could everyone avoid attempting to lock the padlock until the replacement arrives. In the meantime, don't forget to still shut the gate on your way into and out of the allotments. Please put security above convenience.
  • The water taps are due to be switched on at the end of April/beginning of May subject to them being checked for leaks.
  • The mower has been serviced and will be collected from the Parks Department shortly. It is available for hire through the Bob in the shop.
  • Volunteers are required for "work days" to help keep unattended plots neat and tidy. This can reduce the amount of weed seeds blown to neighbouring plots, help keep the allotments looking well-used and cared for, and make it easier for new tenants to take on a plot. You can volunteer at the Seed and Plant Swap day on the 4th May.
  • The holder of plot 18, Phil Rainford, is part of a team researching heritage fruit trees of Lancashire. If you are interested in learning a little more please visit Phil's plot.
  • Levels of interest are being sought into day trips and talks for allotment holders. This may include inviting speakers to the site or suitable venue, or, hiring a mini-bus to visit interesting places such as Garden Organics in Coventry, home to heritage varieties of seeds and plants.
